Guyana’s emerging esports programme recorded a landmark achievement in Mexico City, securing third place and a bronze medal at the inaugural FIFAe Continental Championship North, Central America and Caribbean by eConcacaf.

Represented by eFootball Mobile players Christian “christian89” Harris and Jeremiya “jrboss2000” Johnson, Guyana delivered an impressive campaign against some of the region’s strongest competitors, establishing itself among the leading nations in Concacaf esports.

The national team competed under the guidance of Head Coach and Guyana Football Federation Head of Esports Martin Massiah, with Daniel Idal serving as assistant coach and supporting the team’s media and streaming operations.

Guyana was the only English-speaking nation to finish among the top three, ending the tournament behind champions Mexico and runners-up Costa Rica.

The tournament featured six countries in the eFootball Mobile competition: Guyana, Mexico, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama and the Dominican Republic.

Strong Group-Stage Performance

Guyana began the competition strongly, finishing second in the round-robin group stage with eight points from five matches.

Tournament hosts Mexico dominated the opening phase with a perfect 15 points from five victories, while Guyana’s eight-point total placed them ahead of Costa Rica, who finished with seven points, and Trinidad and Tobago, who accumulated six.

The top-four finish secured Guyana’s place in the knockout stage and set up a meeting with Costa Rica.

Harris and Johnson remained composed in their first knockout encounter, battling Costa Rica to a goalless draw in the opening match before earning a crucial 1-0 victory in the second.

The result sent Guyana forward through the winners’ bracket and placed the national pair against tournament favourites and eventual champions Mexico.

Guyana Pushes Mexico to the Limit

Facing the host nation, Guyana demonstrated that its strong group-stage showing was no fluke.

The opening encounter ended 1-1 as the Guyanese pair matched Mexico in a tightly contested game.

With a place in the championship final on the line, the second match proved equally competitive. Mexico eventually edged Guyana 2-1, handing the South American nation its first knockout-series defeat.

Despite the loss, Guyana remained alive in the tournament due to the championship’s double-elimination format.

The performance against Mexico was significant, with Guyana holding the eventual champions to a draw in one match and finishing just one goal short in the other.

Costa Rica Edges Guyana in Decisive Rematch

Guyana’s final opportunity to reach the championship match came against a familiar opponent in Costa Rica.

After recovering through the lower bracket, Costa Rica earned a rematch with Harris and Johnson, setting up another closely fought series between the two nations.

The opening game finished 1-1, leaving the contest finely balanced heading into the second encounter.

Costa Rica eventually secured a narrow 1-0 victory, ending Guyana’s challenge for a place in the final and confirming the country’s third-place finish.

Across their four knockout matches against Costa Rica, Guyana recorded one victory, two draws and one defeat — highlighting how little separated the two teams throughout the competition.

Costa Rica subsequently advanced to the championship final against Mexico. Following a 1-1 draw in the opening game, Mexico won the second match 2-0 to capture the inaugural title and secure the region’s qualification berth for the FIFAe Finals.

Landmark Achievement for Guyana Esports

Although Guyana narrowly missed a place in the final, the bronze-medal finish represents a major milestone for competitive esports in the country.

The national team not only finished ahead of several established regional opponents but also defeated Costa Rica during the knockout stage and pushed eventual champions Mexico in one of its most demanding series of the tournament.

For Harris and Johnson, the achievement further strengthened Guyana’s growing reputation in international eFootball Mobile competition.

The result also reflects the continued development of the Guyana Football Federation’s esports programme, which has expanded its involvement across competitive gaming disciplines including eFootball Mobile, eFootball Console and Rocket League.

Guyana entered the continental championship after progressing through the FIFAe Nations League qualification process, earning its place among the region’s leading teams following a series of qualifying competitions.

Massiah has described the national esports programme as another avenue through which Guyana can compete internationally, with the Mexico City performance providing further evidence of the country’s potential.

For a developing esports nation, the campaign was a significant statement.

A second-place finish in the group stage, a victory over Costa Rica, a competitive series against eventual champions Mexico and a bronze medal ensured that Guyana left Mexico City with more than just a podium finish.

The national team also demonstrated that Guyana can compete with the best eFootball Mobile teams in the Concacaf region — providing another important foundation for the continued growth of esports locally and internationally.
