Young girls participating in STRIDE592’s “Girls on the Move” initiative are continuing to build their fitness, confidence and sense of community through structured training and mentorship, with members of the programme recently joining STRIDE592’s weekly Wednesday and Saturday training sessions.

Launched in June 2026, Girls on the Move is a 12-week youth development initiative designed primarily to empower young girls through physical activity, mentorship, mental wellness support and life-skills development. The programme provides participants with a supportive environment in which they can build confidence, improve their physical fitness and strengthen their emotional wellbeing.

The inaugural cohort includes 21 girls, along with four boys who have enthusiastically embraced the programme as honorary members and regularly participate in the training sessions. Participants are supported by a network of mentors, educators and wellness advocates who help guide their development throughout the programme.

Participants meet twice weekly for structured run-and-walk sessions designed to gradually build their endurance and prepare them to complete a 5K road race. These training sessions are complemented by team-building activities, mentorship and discussions centred on confidence, healthy relationships, resilience and recognising personal value.

By joining STRIDE592’s regular Wednesday and Saturday training sessions at the Guyana National Park, participants also have the opportunity to train alongside members of the wider walking and running community. The programme reflects STRIDE592’s broader philosophy of using physical activity not only to improve fitness, but also as a tool for promoting healthier lifestyles, personal growth and stronger communities.

Through their interactions with mentors and fellow participants, members of the programme are encouraged to build positive relationships, support one another and develop skills that extend beyond the training sessions. The initiative is supported by MODEC, MVP Sports, GBI/Oasis Water, Solomon Shipping Investment Consultants and PowerHouse.

The programme has also received endorsements from Women in Sports, Blossom Inc. and the Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The support of organisations spanning sport, business and social development has strengthened the initiative’s collaborative approach, helping to expand access to wellness, mentorship and positive recreational opportunities for young participants.
